The implementation of CEDAW in Italy

If discrimination based on gender and 'sexual orientation persists, it is mainly because the institutions have in place ineffective actions and / or insufficient to deconstruct the stereotypes about the role of women who are at the root of all violence and discrimination, social exclusion of all women.

Today more than ever we can say that if Italian women discrimination based on gender and orientation aggravated sexual seem, it is also because they are proposed directly (through their thoughts, words, deeds and omissions, would be afffermare profanely), even by those who represent the institutions, should instead work to counter them.

Italy has ratified the CEDAW Optional Protocol to the 10.06.1985 and signed on 29/10/2002.

States that have ratified the CEDAW and other regional maps to protect the rights of women, have assumed an obligation in mind: ensure that women have citizenship, which in practice so that they can enjoy their fundamental rights. This implies an obligation for the state to take action to remove discriminatory situations not only through regulatory changes but also fostering a cultural change, acknowledging that freedom of choice of the woman, her psychological and physical integrity are absolute values, which should be approved without leaving room for compromise and a moral or religious.

to its gender specificity, CEDAW is also an important tool to lobby to bring the institutions, national and local, with the proper management of resources devoted to equal opportunity policies, and to verify that the objectives of policies and regulatory reforms relating to equal opportunities meet the guidelines set forth by the Committee periodically on the implementation of CEDAW.

Il Governo non le tradusse, nè le diffuse. Io per prima, insieme ai Giuristi Democratici, iniziai a denunciare questa grave inadempienza, grazie alla quale era possibile che le politiche in materia di pari opportunità nazionali continuassero a seguire traiettorie ed obiettivi assai lontani dalle priorità indicate dalla CEDAW.
